Herta will drive for Cadillac in an official F1 session for the first time when he takes part in Free Practice 1.

It will be a double-duty of sorts for the American, who will dovetail his F1 outing with his FIA Formula 2 Championship commitments with Hitech.

“I’m excited for Barcelona,” said Herta, who will replace Sergio Perez.

“I feel ready to get out there. I’ve had time in the simulator at Charlotte, learning the track and the procedures to follow during the session.

“I’ve also been working with the team at Silverstone and at the track over the past few races, following how they work so I can get up to speed as quickly as possible.

“The aim is to have a clean session and help the team gather the data it needs, as well as getting used to the F1 car.

“It’s going to be a busy weekend as I’m competing in F2 at the same time, but pressure is a privilege so I’m looking forward to it.”

Under the F1 regulations, teams must field a rookie driver in four FP1 outings during the season.

The absence of Sakhir and Jeddah coupled with sprint races across Shanghai, Miami and Montreal have limited rookie practice opportunities.

Fornaroli joined McLaren as a reserve and development driver off the back of winning last year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship.

Leonardo Fornaroli will drive in Free Practice 1 for McLaren this weekend, replacing Lando Norris in the MCL40.

While it will be Fornaroli’s first F1 weekend on track, he has driven F1 cars as part of the testing of previous cars program.

The Italian has driven the MCL60 at Barcelona-Catalunya, Circuit of the Americas and Silverstone.

“I’m very excited to drive the MCL40 this weekend in the Barcelona-Catalunya FP1 session,” said Fornaroli.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to help the team with their preparations and to work through the planned Friday program.

“This is going to be a very important mission for me because it’s going to be my first official Formula 1 session. It’s something I’ve worked through for a long time, so very excited for it.

“All the experience I’ve gained through the previous TPC days so far were very important for my development, so a big thank you to Zak [Brown], Andrea [Stella] and Alessandro [Alunni Bravi], and to all the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team.

“Can’t wait for this weekend.”

Italy's Leonardo Fornaroli won the 2025 FIA Formula 2 Championship.

Luke Browning will also take part in practice with Williams and will return for the Austrian Grand Prix, replacing Alex Albon in the first instance and Carlos Sainz in the second.

Williams sporting director Sven Smeets hailed Browning’s development to date.

“Luke continues to prove himself as a valuable part of the team, both through his simulator work and his performances on track,” said Smeets.

“Giving him his first opportunity to get behind the wheel of the FW48 across two race weekends is an important step in his development and a natural progression.

“We have a talented group of young drivers in the Williams F1 Team Driver Academy, and we’re pleased to continue providing opportunities like this to support drivers’ progression and development.”

F1 world championship leader Kimi Antonelli will also sit out FP1 for Frederik Vesti.
